Landscape photography can be a challenge, but with the right composition and good natural light it can be made a little easier.
All the world's cameras, film and other photographic equipment is nothing more than tools for making landscape pictures. The camera does not think for themselves. Do we use a digital camera or film, the principles of photography the same applies.
We do not have to stick to many rules to produce great landscape images, but knowing what they will make you more successful pictures. There are two important points in landscape photography: how to compose your image, and how to use natural light available in certain situations.
Let's start with light: There are three basic properties of light: intensity, direction and color.
Intensity: refers to the power of light. If the sun is high in the sky, light can be harsh and too strong. Cloudy days bring soft and defused light.
Directions: This refers to the placement of light. There are three categories of light placement: front, rear and side-lighting. Side lighting produces more texture between light and shade.
Color: the color of sunlight varies depending on the conditions and time of day. If the sun is shining at the beginning or end of the day, the color of light will be much warmer, and will lead to a much more dramatic scene.
Understanding the natural light will develop your ability to see. You'll begin to see the beauty of light in different ways and interesting.
In landscape photography it is important to take care with composition. A normal scene can be transformed by paying attention to detail. Composition is about how you arrange the elements in front of you.
Here are some ideas where you might find useful.
Leading the line : To lead the line into the main part of the scene will draw you into your image viewer. These lines will not be straight. Lines, such as tracks, a river or fence, can work successfully.
Flowers foreground : foreground of a simple object can give your landscape a sense of depth. Using a small aperture (f/22) to keep the entire scene in focus.
Natural frames : frame your scene with the elements around you. It will focus on the main part of the picture. Trees make a great natural frame.
These are just a few important guidelines, and combined with a good eye, you have everything you need to get the best out of photography - especially landscape photography. These are just some rules to get you started, but like all rules, they are there to be broken.
